I suggest you get hold of your local housing department and though they are unhelpful, they have a duty of care to you so hassle them. Did they put down a deposit or give you a letter of guarantee? Unfortunately local councils are a waste of space and rarely have a clue when it comes down to housing! However, they must be made accountable for spending public money, so give them grief!
