rent arrears and damage to property

my tenant recently moved out after not paying his rent for two months and paying late for months before. He also changed the locks on the front door! On checking the property after he'd moved, the place is full of fleas(from a cat he wasnt supposed to have) and carpets badly damaged. His deposit does not cover the rent and damage cost total, so any suggestions on if/how I can reclaim these?
