You are quite right to be concerned and really the best thing I can suggest is that you point out to the tenants that there is a clause in the contract that they signed stating that they have to give 2 months notice - if they kick up a fuss then you would be best advised to contact the Office of Fair Trading in your area and ask them for their advice.
